Polk Jury Awards $7.5 Million to Hit-and-Run Crash Victim

Saturday, May 28, 2011 | A Polk County jury has awarded $7.5 million in damages to a Winter Haven man injured during a hit-and-run crash.

James R. Key II was struck Feb. 9, 2009, while riding his motorcycle along Recker Highway, according to reports of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Laura Madrigal was arrested on charges of leaving the scene of a crash with injury. She pleaded no contest Nov. 2, 2009, and received five years of probation.

A lawsuit was filed on April 28, 2009, against Madrigal and the owner of the van that she was driving.

A jury reached a verdict Thursday following a four-day trial, said Lance Holden, one of Key’s lawyers.

Key suffered extensive injuries in the crash and has undergone more than 10 surgeries, Holden said.
